At the heart of our Good Shepherd Lodge is our specialised dementia care. As one of the longest established providers of dementia care in North Queensland we pride ourselves on providing your loved ones with specialised care that is personalised to them, be it within the general aged care area or in an environment that provides them with an added layer of security.
Dementia affects 1 in 15 Australians over the aged of 65. We frequently find that only minimal intervention is required for most people with dementia but whatever the need, we provide a personal and bespoke approach for everyone who joins our community.
For those that need additional assistance we work holistically with our team of specialised staff which includes diversional therapists, nursing and allied health professionals who conduct activities and programs that are dementia specific. This enables us to provide the best possible plan with your loved one’s care and wellbeing at the centre.
Every attention to detail has gone into making our community ‘dementia friendly’. This includes tactile walls, gardens, craft rooms and friendly pets on occasion!
Good Shepherd has been designed to enable a sense of connectivity, togetherness, and sense of community, after all it is our residents’ home.
We offer a wide range of activities tailored to individual residents needs. This includes movie events, chapel, celebration of special events, ‘dance while you sit’ and bingo. One of our most popular activities are our weekly bus outings which we can tailor to residents’ requests and which can include driving past the land or family home of years gone by to provide a sense of familiarity.
In addition, we encourage where possible for residents to carry on previous hobbies or activities.
At Good Shepherd we are ‘one big family’ and we see the loved ones and care givers of our residents as an extension to that. We invite families and care givers to visit and join in with activities.
The wellbeing of your loved one is our priority therefore we have invested in the latest technology to monitor our residents without invading their privacy.
We understand that your loved one having to leave their home or move into an aged care community can cause uncertainly and angst for you. Our friendly staff are always on hand to discuss with you the change in circumstances and offer support.
