Specialist Secure Dementia Unit
One of only three specialist dementia care units in Queensland, and the only one in North Queensland, our secure dementia unit has been established with the aim of improving services and assisting people with dementia to live a more fulfilled life.
We have a high resident to staff ratio, where we work alongside people with the highest care needs.
The unit provides a higher level of care for residents who may have behavioural or psychological symptoms that aren’t best suited to a traditional dementia care environment. During the time residents are with us, we provide support to reduce or stabilise their symptoms and our goal is to enable them to return to a less intensive environment within 12 months. We aim for complete success however in the event that this is not the case, there is the opportunity for the resident to return to the unit to continue stabilising their symptoms.
Working with a Specialist Dementia Coordinator, our residents can achieve the highest care within an environment that has been especially designed for their needs. We work holistically with government and other referral agencies to provide the best possible outcome for every resident. It’s what we do.
Our carefully selected colour pallet provides stability and familiarity, and reinforces our safe and protected environment, which has been proven to reduce the effects of dementia. All staff working in Azalea have been specifically recruited and receive extra training to provide the highest level of quality care and safety. Residents also continue to access medical specialists to provide clinical oversight and care whilst within the unit.
What is the criteria for someone entering Azalea?
The following identifies if an individual is eligible to enter our Azalea unit.
The behaviours and psychological symptoms of the person:
1. are primarily as a result of dementia
2. are severe or very severe (aggression, severe agitation, vocalisation)
3. those who are unable to be appropriately cared for by mainstream aged care services and have not responded to trials of other specialist services.

Anyone can make a referral.
This includes existing aged care recipients from Commonwealth Home Support Programme services, home care, flexible care or residential care and people not receiving aged care (i.e. transitioning from hospital or other environments) can be referred for assessment through Dementia Support Australia.
